Thyroid Problems - Symptoms, Tests and Treatment
Thyroid problems are very common, and can lead to a wide range of health issues. Many people know that sudden, unexplained weight gain or weight loss can be symptoms of a thyroid disorder, but there are a number of other symptoms to be aware of, which could indicate the need for a thyroid blood test and checkup.
What does the thyroid do?
A healthy thyroid produces hormones that are necessary for cells in the body to function normally. This includes regulating the metabolism, which is the process that turns food into energy.
Symptoms of Overactive Thyroid
If too many thyroid hormones are produced, then many of the body’s systems start to speed up. We call this an Overactive Thyroid - which causes symptoms such as:
- nervousness, anxiety and irritability
- mood swings
- difficulty sleeping
- persistent tiredness and weakness
- sensitivity to heat
- swelling in your neck from an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre)
- an irregular and/or unusually fast heart rate
- twitching or trembling
- weight loss
Symptoms of Underactive Thyroid
If too few thyroid hormones are produced, your systems can slow down - known as an Underactive Thyroid. Symptoms can include:
- Weight Gain
- Feeling cold
- Dry skin & hair
- Muscle aches
How is Thyroid Function Tested?
We can check whether your thyroid is working properly by carrying out a simple thyroid function blood test. The results are usually back within two working days, and if a problem is detected, the doctor will advise on the next steps for treatment. Most thyroid problems are treated very easily and effectively with medication, however if they are left untreated they can cause complications which can lead to severe health problems.
