Citrus Zing - 6 Health Benefits of Grapefruit

If the thought of eating grapefruit makes your mouth pucker and your eyes water, then let us tell you why this sharp fruit is a surprising health hero.

1) It’s a dieter’s friend

An abundance of enzymes, high water content and low sodium levels make grapefruit a popular choice with those trying to lose weight. It is also low in calories and high in fibre which helps you feel fuller for longer. It also has one of the highest water contents of any fruit helping you stay hydrated.

2) Reduces the risk of kidney stones

The bitter taste of grapefruits is attributed to naringenin, a naturally occurring compound that regulates the PKD2 protein responsible for kidney stones. Eating the fruit or drinking its juice will have equal benefits – just make sure any juice doesn’t have added sugar!

3) Fights gum disease

A study published in the 2005 British Dental journal found the daily consumption of grapefruit can reduce gum disease. This is largely down to the high levels of vitamin C contained within grapefruit.

4) Protects against cancer

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and has been linked to the decrease in risk of certain cancers. The naringenin has been found to stimulate DNA repair in cancer cells protecting the body from developing cancer.

In particular, the pink and red varieties of grapefruit contain Lycopene which is thought to have properties that help fight cell-damaging free radicals.

5) Reduces stress

If you really can’t tolerate the sharp taste of grapefruit, the good news is you can reap benefits from just inhaling its fresh, citrusy scent. The smell of citrus fruit has been found to curb stress and anxiety levels, helping to energize and cheer us.

6) Strengthens the immune system

Any fruit or vegetable high in vitamin C will help to support and strengthen our immune system. Maintaining good levels can help reduce cold symptoms, and act as a natural antihistamine to help control allergies. Just half a grapefruit can provide around 78% of your recommended daily vitamin C intake.

As a word of caution, grapefruit can have a negative effect on your body if you are taking some antibiotics, heart medications or statins.. If you are concerned always speak to your GP.
