Private HbA1c Glucose Test

The HbA1c test is a blood test commonly used in the diagnosis and management of Diabetes. Whilst a blood glucose test can analyse the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream at the exact moment the blood is taken, the HbA1c gives an overall marker of your glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. This gives a good indication of how well your diabetes is being managed.

Who should have a HbA1c Test?

If you have diabetes, you should have a HbA1c test at least twice each year, in addition to your regular home blood sugar testing. In some cases, it is advisable to test more frequently e.g If you are struggling to control high sugars, new medications or getting symptoms.

By performing this test, your doctor can get a clearer picture of how well your treatment plan is working, and suggest any changes that need to be made.

HbA1c can also be effective in determining whether you are likely to develop diabetes in the future. If high levels are detected, but not in the diabetic range, it is will still be possible to make changes to your lifestyle and weight which may prevent diabetes developing.

How is a HbA1c Test Performed?

A sample of blood is taken from the arm, and sent off to the lab for analysis. Results are usually available the next day.
