What Does The Liver Do?
The liver is the largest solid organ in the body, and fulfils a number of vitally important functions, including ‘cleaning’ the blood and regulating the levels of fats, glucose and amino acids contained within it.
It also breaks down food and converts it to energy, fights infections and stores and manufactures chemicals such as vitamins, proteins and enzymes, all of which are essential to the smooth running of the body’s systems. It is effectively the body’s factory or powerhouse.
Liver Conditions & Testing
Unfortunately there are a number of serious conditions which can affect the liver, including liver disease, cirrhosis, Hepatitis and liver cancer. Latest research suggests that Liver Disease is now the fifth largest cause of death in the UK, and that 1 in 5 of us are at risk of the disease.
Some liver conditions can cause no symptoms at all until it is ‘too late’, however a quick and simple Liver Function test can assess your liver’s health, and indicate when there may be a problem that should be investigated further.
